The year-old Bumgarner allowed only three hits over eight innings and took all the fun out of a festive Halloween crowd. Aubrey Huff and Buster Posey backed their young lefty with home runs and San Francisco put on a fielding clinic. Coming off their lone loss in the Series, these Giants delivered a complete game. I'm not using that as an excuse, but today they were much more relaxed, much more confident. Ace Tim Lincecum will try Monday night to deliver the Giants' first championship since they moved to San Francisco in And now it's up to Cliff Lee to save the Rangers' season in Game 5.
Only six teams in World Series history have overcome a deficit, mostly recently Kansas City in Hopefully we sleep good tonight. We've got a big challenge tomorrow with Cliff Lee," Huff said. Bumgarner and closer Brian Wilson made the Giants the first team to post two shutouts in a World Series since Baltimore threw three straight to close out the Dodgers in They've got velocity.
They can spin the baseball. They can change speeds and they keep their defence engaged. Huff, who grew up in the Metroplex, hit a two-run homer in the third that gave Bumgarner all the support he needed. Posey added a solo shot in the eighth -- Bumgarner and Posey became the first rookie battery to start in the Series since Spec Shea and Yogi Berra for the Yankees in He's got it all and he has no fear of anyone," Giants outfielder Nate Schierholtz said.
Andres Torres doubled twice, singled and drove in a run and Edgar Renteria also got three hits. Left-fielder Cody Ross came up with a shoestring catch, second baseman Freddy Sanchez made a leaping grab and Posey threw out Josh Hamilton trying to steal. Bumgarner helped himself, too, knocking down Hamilton's scorcher up the middle.
Coming off a win Saturday night, the Rangers and their fans were ready to even this Series. And rightly so—what sports broadcaster would give airtime during a game to a person who is not playing? Fast-forward to October 15, Gregor Blanco is at bat in the bottom of the eighth inning, and the camera suddenly, inexplicably, pans to the dugout.
For the next minute and a half, as the count goes from to and several balls are fouled off, the game itself seems a mere distraction from the real topic at hand. Joe Buck chimes in, "If Brian Wilson was pitching, a ball in his beard would be a ground rule double. They'd never find it!
Talk about a character. He is just a walking reality show. This dialogue is solely concerned with Brian Wilson the flamboyant caricature rather than Brian Wilson the baseball player. Nowhere in this exchange is there even a veiled reference to Wilson's actual skill. This type of fixation on Wilson belies a crucial misunderstanding of Giants brand baseball and Wilson himself. While it'd be foolish to assume that gaining a spot on the national stage would permit any club to export its own cozy self-image, the problem in this case is that national sportscasters' misled buy-in to the cult of personality that Brian Wilson has become is demeaning to active Giants players and their competitors whose skills and back stories merit attention.
On a larger scale, it cheapens baseball by affirming the cultural notion that fame in and of itself is a quality to be discussed and emulated.
