The twist here is that these nations are ruled by pigs.
There are six different nations that you can play as in this game. Japan has Sushi Swine and that was the team my wife would always play as. These are just hilarious stereotypes that still make me laugh, but I would wager some people would find them offensive in this day and age. The gameplay of Hogs Of War is that of a turn based tactics game. You pick your squad and you can name your pigs if you like. You can then select what classes your pigs will be. There is a heavy gunner, medic, engineer, and espionage class and each one has its own set of weapons that they can use.
The medic for example can heal pigs, the heavy gunner brings all of the major firepower. Each side gets to take a turn and that is basically how the gameplay works, it is very similar to Worms actually.
There is a single-player campaign that has a fun story. The idea here is that you need to pick your nation and then take all the areas of the map until you have won them all. It is basic stuff, but for a single-player mode, it is fun. It is in multiplayer where the game really shines. You have different modes that you can play, but the mode that my wife and I have been playing for nearly 20 years at this point is team deathmatch! Hogs Of War is percent a British game and that is evident from the moment you turn it on.
The presentation is showing its age a bit. The whole game is in 3D, but these are some very basic 3D models and the maps do not exactly have a ton of detail on them. I could imagine that someone looking at this game for the first time would probably think it looks terrible.
While I will admit, nostalgia plays a big part in why I love Hogs Of War so much, the fact my wife and I still play this a few times each year says that the game clearly has something.
It is a fun and charming game with a very cheeky sense of humor. I will admit that it has not aged all that gracefully, but this is a game that I still find a great deal of fun, especially when played with another person. Here's the gist of this one: Take three to six of your best oinkers, lead them onto a 3D battle environment, blow the crap out of another army using lots of interesting weapons, and move on to the next round.
